About
Petanque SMS is a collection of competition management tools and historical results for major petanque competitions across the UK and Ireland. Alongside the management applications, the site provides current competition results, downloadable reports, and historical archives for events including the Celtic Challenge, Home Nations, and Inter-Regionals.
Competition management software is currently available for Celtic Challenge (2024–present), Home Nations (2019–present), and Inter-Regionals (2012–2023). Historical archives extend much further back wherever reliable records have been obtained. Although the Inter-Regionals software was retired after the 2023 competition, the archive continues with results from subsequent competitions managed using different software.
Although originally developed to simplify the administration of major petanque competitions, the project has evolved into both a competition management platform and a long-term archive preserving the history of these events.
Purpose
The project began as a practical competition management system and has grown to include an expanding archive of historical competition results. By bringing together records from a variety of sources, it aims to support organisers while helping preserve the history of these competitions for future reference.
Technology
The site is built with PHP for backend processing, XML for data storage, and modern CSS for responsive, accessible interfaces. Everything is developed in-house with an emphasis on clarity, reliability, control, and security.
Applications are created in Microsoft 365 Excel with a bespoke VBA library, enabling features such as web access, report generation, and automated competition management.
Legacy Results Disclaimer
Legacy results dating back to the inception of these competitions have been compiled from a range of archived and current sources. Every effort has been made to ensure the information is accurate, although it is provided in good faith and may occasionally contain historical inaccuracies inherited from the original source material. Where complete result sets have been imported into the software, the order in which matches are displayed may differ from the original publication, but the recorded outcomes and final standings are accurate or have been corrected where errors in the original records were identified.
Sources include publications from the Welsh Petanque Association, English Petanque (the former governing body), Southern Counties Petanque, Active-Results.com, and other archived competition records.

All applications require a license key. Each application includes a trial licence for evaluation and initial setup. Continued use requires a licence key issued specifically for your installation.
